Sphaerophoria-System – hoverfly larvae playing valuable aphid control role

How does Sphaerophoria-System control aphids?

  • Efficient hoverfly for aphid controlSphaerophoria rueppellii is a native European hoverfly whose larvae feed on all major aphid species. They can also consume whiteflies, thrips and spider mites as alternative prey.
  • Highly voracious larvae – a single larva can consume up to 200 aphids during its development. Adult hoverflies lay their eggs directly in large aphid colonies.
  • Perfect for IPM programmes – Sphaerophoria-System is fully compatible with aphid parasitoids and also contributes to crop pollination.

When should you introduce Sphaerophoria-System?

  • Start at the first signs of aphids – introduce Sphaerophoria-System as soon as aphids are detected.
  • Suitable for preventative and curative use – distribute the pupae over several release points or concentrate them in and around aphid hotspots.
  • Repeat when necessary – weekly introductions help establish a stable population and improve aphid control.
  • Combine with aphid parasitoids – both beneficials complement each other for even more effective aphid suppression.

How do you release Sphaerophoria-System?

  • Use Bio-Boxes – divide the contents of the bottle over several Bio-Boxes and hang them within the crop, protected from direct sunlight.
  • Focus on hotspots – position the release points in and around aphid colonies for rapid establishment.
  • Use the product immediately – release the pupae as soon as possible after delivery.
  • Provide a humid microclimate – this supports optimal larval development.

Under which conditions should you use Sphaerophoria-System?

  • Optimum performance between 25°C and 35°C (77°F to 95°F) – the hoverfly is active between 12°C and 40°C (54°F to 104°F) but performs best under warm conditions.
  • Monitor performance – the first adults emerge within a few days. Black larval droppings (meconium) on the leaves indicate active feeding.
  • Ideal for integrated pest management – thanks to its high predation capacity, compatibility with aphid parasitoids and contribution to pollination, Sphaerophoria-System is a valuable component of any IPM strategy.
